Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo for MacBook and MacBook Pro systems.

While perusing our selection of restored Mac laptops, many of you have been confused by the difference between the intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors in the classic MacBooks. Here's the low-down on these two similarly named CPUs:

Core 2 Duo runs about 30% faster than a Core Duo.
Core 2 Duo has 64-bit architecture, while the Core Duo is 32-bit.

Both processors have the same front-side bus speed of 667MHz and the same L2 cache.

While the processor's clock speed may be the same, a 2GHz Core 2 Duo runs faster than a 2GHz Core Duo, by virtue of it's improved 64-bit architecture. In spite of this, the power draw (and heat generated) is nearly identical on both processors. However, the Core 2 Duo is available in faster speeds than the Core Duo, and more speed means more power draw, more power means more heat.

Note: Some sources claim that the Core 2 Duo runs hotter, draws more power and is less stable than the Core Duo but, if you're comparing CPUs with the same clock speed, you're likely to find those differences negligible during ordinary use (ie. anything other than benchmark tests).

What's the difference between a used and refurbished Mac?

You have lots of purchase options when it comes to buying a replacement Macintosh. Today we'll be focusing on MacBook and MacBook Pro systems - looking at the differences between used systems and refurbished. Is there a difference? Let's find out.

Why would you want to buy a used, refurbished or restored Mac in the first place? To save money, of course! Used, refurbished and restored MacBooks and MacBook Pro systems represent a great value to end users and businesses alike.

Used MacBook and MacBook Pro systems are typically pre-owned systems that come to you with a wipe-down and a smile. Help! My MacBook Pro screen is not opening correctly. I think the screen hinges might be broken.

Laptop screen hinges are one of the most delicate parts (besides your LCD screen) on your MacBook or MacBook Pro. Older MacBook Pro systems are especially vulnerable to hinge damage due to the very thin aluminum that surrounds the LCD screen to keep it in place. First of all, let's discuss a few ways to avoid having your hinges get damaged in the first place.

Rule number one: ALWAYS use both hands when opening your screen. If you obey this one simple rule, your screen hinges and screen support assembly will last much longer. It sounds so simple, and yes, we forget about this important rule all the time, but when you grab your MacBook Pro and flip open the screen with one hand, you are flexing your screen in ways that it was not meant to be. Place your hands on either side of the screen and open slowly - it's easy, take a breath and relax before you "flip the lid". If you own an older MacBook Pro, be sure the latch on the front is released BEFORE you try and open your screen. It is very easy to bend your screen housing, or worse, break your MacBook Pro LCD screen.

Rule number two: Keep your MacBook Pro away from the edge! The edge of the table, the edge of the seat of your car, the edge of your desk...you get the idea. Another simple rule that can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs or parts replacement. Most hinge and screen frame damage is caused by drops - many of which could have been avoided if we all simply put our MacBook Pro away from the edge of whatever we are setting it on.

Rule number three: If your MacBook Pro is "parked" most of the time, you can probably skip this one - but, if you carry your MacBook Pro around a lot, get yourself a "sleeve" made of silicon, leather or other material that will help keep your MacBook Pro from slipping out of your butter fingers. Yeah, like we've never dropped ours before....trust us - you want a sleeve.

Rule number four: Get a good carrying case - one with a decent suspension. And no, we're not talking about your cars suspension - get a back that has a suspended inner section for your MacBook Pro if possible. This will keep your laptop from coming into contact with the ground, since we know you like to toss your bag around at the end of the day.

OK, so you followed all these rules and it still happened - your MacBook Pro screen is all bent up, or out of alignment with the rest of the computer. Or, maybe you can't even open the screen up. First thing....STOP - do not pass go, do not attempt to open up your screen. There are all kinds of wonderful cables and such that are housed right around your MacBook Pro hinge assembly. These delicate cables can get ripped apart easily, increasing the cost of the repair you are going to get done so you can use your MacBook Pro again. Go borrow someone else's computer to Google "MacBook Pro Hinge Repair" - don't risk opening up your screen and doing more damage.

Help! I got a new MacBook screen installed and now I can't adjust my screen brightness.

What's the difference between an LED and LCD screen in a MacBook Pro?

Good question - but actually, the first thing we need to clear up is the idea that your MacBook or MacBook Pro has an LED screen and not an LCD screen. The LED refers to just the backlight portion of your screen, not the entire screen itself. There is a common misconception that the current model MacBook and MacBook Pro do not use LCD screens.

So, what's the deal? Well, before June of 2007, Apple laptops used LCD screens that used a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp as a "backlight". And why would these need this backlight in the first place? Another good question - you're on a roll. LCD screens need a backlight, because the screens themselves (the liquid crystal display part) do not actually emit any light. In order to see what is on your screen, you need a special light, located behind the glass LCD screen, to brighten things up enough for you to view them. A common repair for MacBook and MacBook Pro systems is a damaged screen due to a fall that causes the backlight to stop working. You can usually tell if your backlight is damaged - turn on your MacBook or MacBook pro, or your PowerBook or iBook for that matter, and if your screen looks dark, but you can still see things on the screen when you shine a flashlight onto it, chances are your screen has a damaged or non-functional backlight.

During 2007, Apple (and a bunch of other companies) decided that CCFL backlights were evil and they had to go. They were full of mercury (bad), they used up to much power (bad) and they broke rather easily (very bad). So, enter stage right, the LED powered backlight in June of 2007. Since that time, all Apple laptops have used a backlit LCD screen that has an LED based backlight. This has helped increase battery run-times, increased reliability and helped the environment all at the same time. All good.

Even though the LED is more reliable and less fragile than the CCFL, they still break when dropped hard enough. What is a unibody and why do I care?

You may have heard the term "unibody" being used in conjunction with an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop during the past year. Apple has always been fanatical about the design elements of every Mac. With the unibody MacBook and MacBook Pro, the product designers took a number of pieces that were typically used to build a laptop and combined them into one. This single piece becomes the body of the MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, hence the term "unibody". The entire top case is milled out of a single piece of aluminum, giving the unibody MacBook and MacBook Pro systems an extremely rigid frame and a high quality "fit and finish" that you won't find on other laptop computers.

Help! I'm out of space on my MacBook Pro hard drive.

With more music, more movies, more applications and more data filling up our hard drives each day, what do you do when you fill up the factory installed hard drive in your MacBook or MacBook Pro?

Good question. You have a few options when you start to run out of space on your MacBook or MacBook pro hard drive:

1. Do nothing

2. Replace the drive yourself

3. Hire TechRestore to replace the drive, transfer your data and thoroughly check out your MacBook

Let's discuss them each in order. First, if you do nothing, what's going to happen? Well, Apple recommends that you have at LEAST 10% of space free (not being used) on your current hard drive for your MacBook or MacBook Pro to work correctly. Not to mention, if you use applications like Photoshop or other apps that work with large files, you need at least 10% free space to work with those files successfully. If you continue to fill up your drive, you will more than likely see your MacBook or MacBook Pro slow down, suffering performance stalls, lots of twirling "beach balls" on the screen and worse. Basically, you don't want to do it. You need to either clear off enough stuff to keep 10% of your drive free (if your Mac has a 250 Gigabyte drive, then your Mac needs 25 Gigs free, my friends) or replace your drive.

Option 2 - install a new drive yourself. Not a bad idea - drives are pretty inexpensive and if you are handy with a screw driver, it should not be that hard for you to do the swap. If you own one of the newer, Unibody MacBook or MacBook Pro systems, it's a little tougher, but not impossible. The question is, do you want your old software on your Mac, or are you going to start fresh and reinstall all your applications? If your familiar with how to clone your drive and how to insure you don't lose any data, then the "self-install" option may be right for you.

That's a great question - one that the PowerBook experts at TechRestore can help you with. With the introduction of the PowerBook G4 in 2001, Apple brought portable Mac computing to an entirely new level. The first G4 PowerBook was the Titanium 400Mhz with a 15" widescreen - this thing was incredible at the time - a laptop made with Titanium? Yes! The TiBook evolved through 1GHz models, eventually making way for the Aluminum PowerBook G4 introduction in 2003. In October of 2008, Apple changed the MacBook forever. An entirely new version was released, with an aluminum "unibody" case carved from a single piece of aluminum. The other dramatic change was the introduction of a glass cover on top of the MacBook LCD screen. This glass screen cover matches the screen design on the MacBook Pro and provides a super-glossy, reflective screen that shows dramatic colors. The MacBook LCD screen uses an LED backlight that contains no mercury, is bright and evenly distributed and is very environmentally friendly.

Great question! There are a number of things that can cause your MacBook and MacBook Pro LCD screen to break. The number one reason for broken screens is accidental damage - here's how to avoid accidentally breaking or damaging your MacBook Pro LCD screen:

First, get a case for your MacBook. By keeping your MacBook Pro in a padded case, you will help eliminate damage that is caused by carrying your MacBook Pro without a case. We receive systems each week where the owner dropped their MacBook after carrying it outside of the case. Get a good case and use it.

Be careful when closing the lid on your MacBook Pro. Apple recommends using both hands when closing the lid of your Mac - one hand on each corner. It sounds silly, but if you grab one corner of the screen and pull down, you can actually break the screen.

Don't leave anything on your MacBook Pro keyboard - anything. That means pencils, pens, paper clips, etc.. We see broken MacBook Pro systems arrive daily for repair that a customer closed the screen and forgot to remove an item that was resting on the keyboard or top-case, resulting in a cracked MacBook Pro LCD screen.

Liquids....keep your distance! Keep your drink out of reach of your MacBook Pro.
